The beginning of the oyster dredging season is heralded each year with the Falmouth Oyster Festival, a celebration of the quality and diversity of seafood in Cornwall. There is always particular focus on the oyster fishery in Falmouth itself, one of the few remaining in the country that still dredges traditionally by sail and hand punt. Celebrity chefs turn out every year to lead exciting cookery demonstrations, alongside top quality local chefs, and the festival always opens with a special guest demo followed by book signing. With oysters, wine and local ale, all manner of seafood, sea shanties, a vibrant parade through town, live music performances, a gripping oyster-shucking competition, a race for Falmouth Working Boats, children’s activities including shell painting, and marquees brimming with Cornish produce, the festival is a must for all oyster, seafood and maritime heritage enthusiasts. An increasing number of Cornish farmers, fishermen and producers have been flocking to the food and craft stalls in the festival marquee over the last few years to show off their produce, and festival goers will be able to browse the wide range of delightful goods on offer.
