Celebrate the country’s love of food and drink at Cornwall’s Porthleven Food Festival on 26th – 28th April
Returning for its 11th year on the weekend of 26th-28th April, Porthleven Food Festival is shaping up to be an unmissable event on the foodie calendar this spring. Attracting some of the UK’s greatest chefs including Antony Worrall Thompson, Stephane Delourme, and Josh Eggleton, and bringing plenty of family entertainment, food stalls, and music to this historic town and fishing port near Helston in Cornwall, if you want to make the most of your spring weekends this year, Porthleven Food Festival promises three jam-packed days of events you’ll never forget.
Known for its great foodie scene all year round, there’s no better place in Cornwall to celebrate the country’s love of food than this beautiful and picturesque harbour. At this year’s festival, the theme is a simple one – Love Food. Aiming to showcase the town’s amazing restaurants and chefs, the best seasonal produce from across the region, as well as providing a platform for culinary talents from further afield, if you love food (and let’s face it who doesn’t!?), there’s no better place in the country to be this April.
Along with drawing in around 40,000 foodies every year, the festival also attracts some huge names from the culinary world, and this year the Chef’s Theatre is cause for excitement. Welcoming talents from across the UK such as Gareth Ward from Ynyshir in Wales and Josh Eggleton from the Pony and Trap near Bristol, they’ll be joining stars of the local scene like Guy Owen of the Idle Rocks in St Mawes and Ben Tunnicliffe from Newlyn’s Tolcarne Inn who will all be demonstrating their significant culinary skills. Kicking off the event as always, festival patron Anthony Worrall Thompson and Porthleven’s own Jude Kereama of Kota and Kota Kai will be competing in the festival’s popular cook-off.
Stroll through the South West Market tent at the festival where you’ll get the opportunity to sample local produce and chat with the many food producers in attendance. Then, visit the over 100 food stalls that call Porthleven home for three days in April before taking the family to Moors field, where you’ll love the Literary & Acoustic Tent, celebrating the stories, words, and music that inspire and entertain us. Your kids will also have so much fun with the free craft and circus workshops and parades taking place at Porthleven Food Festival this year.
Even though most of the daytime entertainment is free, you certainly don’t want to miss out on the evening Shipyard Sessions featuring a host of fantastic musicians such as the mighty Mad Dog Mcrea on Friday night, Cornwall’s top soul musicians on Saturday night along with a DJ set from Pete Isaac of Jelly Jazz, and a line up of fantastic Porthleven-based artists on the Sunday including Half Kut, Rosie Crow and Go Go Skank. Eat, drink and be merry, then stay the night at the festival’s campsite where you can bring your own tent or camper van, or go glamping and book a Bell Tent or Shire Hut complete with beds, mattresses, lockable doors, and electric.
The festival’s own pop-up pub, The Port and Oyster, is also the perfect addition to a festival already jam-packed with must-visit attractions, bringing a cosy pub atmosphere to Porthleven. Here you’ll get to listen to some fantastic folk music, sample some brilliant beers, and learn the secrets of how to mix the perfect drink at incredible cocktail masterclasses. For just £8, which includes all your drinks, you’ll pick up tons of tips from some of Cornwall’s top rum, vodka, and coffee suppliers.
